The godparent-godchild relationship is a special bond directly between you and the child. Aside from any religious aspect, the relationship is exactly the same for a special adult nominated in a naming ceremony.
We asked My Baby Celebration visitors what being a godparent meant to them - the responses can be summarised in the 6 key themes below.
Here are some suggestions for how your christening or naming ceremony gift could symbolise what that relationship means to you, setting the tone for how you would like that special bond to develop in the future.

- Involvement in the child's religious upbringing - consider gifts with a religious connection eg their first Bible, a silver cross, wooden ark toys or canvases to hang in their bedroom

- Child's patron - traditionally a godparent would contribute to the financial wellbeing of the child to help pave their way through life. This could be a gift of intrinsic value such as traditional silverware or investment gifts that will appreciate with time such as fine wine or port, art, minted coins, a first edition book or even a contribution into the child's Trust Fund (most children now have one under a recent government initiative).

- Links to the family - consider heirloom gifts that could be handed to future generations such as traditional nursery toys - rocking horses, dolls houses, music boxes or book collections

- Long term commitment - consider gifts that can be added to at birthdays or other special occasions in the future such as a charm bracelet, a train set, figurines or other collectibles

- Special relationship - many people describe a godparent's duty as simply to "be there" for the child. A gift of friendship jewellery or a charm to symbolise your wishes for the child's future could emphasise this guardian angel aspect to your role.

- Cool godparent - choose a fun, funky or unusual gift that a child would love such as a ride on toy, a playhouse, an unusual soft toy or modern collectibles
